TxDOT approves new nighttime lighting, safety features for area intersections next year

Several area intersections will get lighting and safety upgrades in the coming months, according to plans approved in December by Texas Department of Transportation.

Safety features will be added to two intersections on Kings Highway (Farm to Market Road 989) in 2018, TxDOT Atlanta District spokesman Marcus Sandifer.

At U.S. Highway 59, the nighttime lighting system will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting, said Rebecca Wells, district trafffic engineer. Advance warning markings and rumble strips will be placed on each road at both intersections "to catch the driver's attention. Stop signs with red blinking LED lights along the edges will also be installed on FM 3287 at FM 989."

South Texas Illumination of Winona, Texas, was awarded the contract for the project with a bid of $175,785.

Work should begin in March and take about four months to complete, Wells said.

Five other intersections in the area will get new LED lighting system next year, with high-mast lighting approved for one of them.

"The LED lights are brighter and more cost-efficient than our old lighting systems, and the high-mast lighting, which is also LED, illuminates larger areas," Wells said.

Intersections scheduled lighting additions are:

Bowie County: Kings Highway at FM 3287 (high-mast lighting) and U.S. 59 at FM 2516.

Titus County: state Highway 11 at FM 2348.

Panola County: U.S. 59 at FM 2792 and state Highway 149 at FM 959 South.

South Texas Illumination was awarded this contract, as well, with a bid of $260,188.

Work should begin in March and take about five months to complete, Wells said.
