Sales Tax Holiday

Arkansas could join its neighbors in Texas and elsewhere as one of the states that offers a sales tax holiday for back-to-school shoppers.
But don’t count those savings just yet.
State Rep. Donna Hutchinson, D-Bella Vista, plans to introduce legislation authorizing just such a break from sales taxes when the Legislature goes back into session next year.
Five of the six states bordering Arkansas have sales tax holidays. Every years Arkansas retailers lose money as shoppers head across the borders to take advantage of the savings.
And the state, counties and cities lose tax revenue as well. Shoppers often buy things that are taxed when out shopping for items that are tax exempt.
But it might not be an easy sell at the State Capitol. Hutchinson tried the same thing last year and it failed to pass.
With any luck, lawmakers will be more receptive next time around.
The idea makes a lot of sense. It cost a lot to outfit kids for a new school year and times aren’t any easier in Arkansas than they are in the rest of the country. With fuel, home utilities, food and a host of other costs soaring, the state’s citizens could use a little consideration.
Arkansas lawmakers need to take a serious look at Hutchinson’s proposal. And they need to think about their constituents.
This is a good idea for the state and the people.
