Grand jury indicts inmate on synthetic marijuana charges

An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana is accused of possessing synthetic marijuana while behind bars in an indictment handed down Wednesday.
Jasmer West, 28, is the only defendant listed in a one-count indictment handed down Wednesday in the Texarkana Division of the Eastern District of Texas federal court. The indictment alleges West possessed two forms of synthetic marijuana, 5F-MDMB-PINACA and FUB-AMB, while in Texarkana FCI. The indictment alleges West possessed the contraband April 6.
West is serving a six-year sentence for methamphetamine distribution assessed him last year in the Hot Springs Division of the Western District of Arkansas. West's projected release date is April 4, 2020, according to the Bureau of Prisons website.
However that date could change if West is found guilty of possessing contraband while behind prison walls. The new offense is punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. Any sentence West receives for possessing the synthetic marijuana will run consecutively to West's original term.
The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Robert Schroeder III. A date for West's arraignment has not been set.
