Learn how to shop healthy, prepare food on a budget

Harvest Regional Food Bank and Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance are hosting a Cooking Matters event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at Walmart Supercenter, 133 Arkansas Blvd., Texarkana, Ark.

Participants will be taught how to make healthy, economical food choices on a budget. At the end of the self-guided grocery tour, participants receive a free $10 gift card to practice their new skill by buying dinner for a family of four for $10 or less.

"This helps families learn to shop on a budget and learn other alternatives- cheaper, healthier options they can use. It's teaching them a skill," said Ashley Lockette, Harvest development director.

The program is open to all adults.

Volunteers are needed to help with this event. There are half-day and full-day volunteer shifts available.

"Volunteers will be the ones giving the tours. We'll have several different stations set up and they'll be talking about whatever station is is and how to buy food on a budget," Lockette said.

Volunteers will be trained via email and there will be one training day but the date hasn't been set yet.
