Texas-side leaders unopposed in election

The Texarkana, Texas, mayor and three City Council members are running unopposed for re-election.

Mayor Bob Bruggeman, Ward 1 Council Member Jean Matlock, Ward 4's Christie Alcorn and Ward 6's Josh Davis filed applications to appear on November's general election ballot, but no one else did so by the deadline, 5 p.m. Monday.

"I certainly appreciate the confidence that the citizens have put into my position on the council, as well as the council members who were up for re-election," Bruggeman said, adding that knowing the future makeup of the council is helpful.

"It does provide stability. I think that we have a very good council. We have excellent members who serve on the council, who volunteer their time," he said.

Bruggeman is completing his third term as mayor after serving as Ward 4's representative on the City Council from 2005-2012. Davis has served on the council since 2010, and Matlock has since 2015. Alcorn took office in August 2017, appointed to complete the current term after a member resigned.

Two of the three council members will serve four-year terms of office, and the other will serve a term of three years.

In November 2017, voters approved changing the mayor's and council members' terms of office from two years to three years. To transition to the longer terms while keeping elections evenly staggered, one member taking office in 2017 and two elected in 2018-chosen at random-will serve four-year terms. Last year, Ward 2 Council Member Mary Hart drew the four-year term.

As a result there will be three council elections this year, none in 2019 and two a year beginning in 2020.

Last year the City Council canceled elections for the Ward 2, Ward 3 and Ward 5 seats because the candidates in those races were unopposed. This year's city elections likewise will probably be canceled, Bruggeman said.
