De Queen makes provisions for holiday trash services

The De Queen, Ark., sanitation department will try something new to help meet the demand for trash service during the four-day Christmas weekend, according to Mayor Billy Ray McKelvy.

The city of De Queen will be closed Monday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday, Dec. 25.

The sanitation department will place two dumpsters at strategic locations around the city, in case customers want to haul trash away before the regular trash day.

Two dumpsters will be placed in the parking lot on the east side of the city shop behind Herman Dierks Park. Two more dumpsters will be placed at the fairgrounds and two will be placed at the U.S. Highway 70 West Sportsplex. These will be emptied one time during the weekend.

"This is a trial to see if it will accommodate the extra load. Citizens are reminded that dumpsters located around businesses are not for public use. Businesses pay for these dumpsters and it's frustrating to see them filled by people who are taking what does not belong to them. If you are caught using someone else's dumpster, you could be subject to a ticket for theft of services," said McKelvy.

A few suggestions include:

  •  Do not put lumber or metal in the dumpsters. These can damage the truck.
  •  It is illegal to put yard waste and leaves in with household trash.
  •  Do not leave trash around the dumpster if it is full.
  •  If the dumpsters are abused or turn into a dump, the service will not be offered again.
  •  Please use this service if you must get rid of waste before service resumes Wednesday.
  •  Do not help yourself to the dumpsters that are paid for by someone else.
