Lady Tigers top Hallsville to improve to 3-0

TEXARKANA, Texas -- Texas High improved to 3-0 in District 15-5A play with a hard-fought win over Hallsville.

The Lady Tigers took the lead for good midway through the third quarter and then fended off the Lady Bobcats' charges down the stretch for a 47-44 win Tuesday at Tiger Center.

Texas High's shooting stalled out in the fourth quarter a bit, going 3-of-9, but the Tigers outscored Hallsville by four from the charity stripe in the final stanza.

The longer, taller Bobcats held the advantage in rebounding, 42-36, but THS forced 30 turnovers and committed only 22.

"I'm proud of the girls for surviving the ups and downs and finding a way to win today," Texas High coach Shonda Wilson said. "Hallsville's pretty big; they have a really good team and are well-coached. For our girls to keep fighting and hold them off was big."

Braveon Hunt scored 15 for the Tigers, and Anasia Wilcox added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Catherine Warford scored 12 for Hallsville, and Aubrey Marjason added nine. Warford and Faith Baliraine each had 12 boards.

With the game tied at 8, the Bobcats scored two fastbreak layups to end the first quarter up 12-8.

Ashanti Northcross and Hunt each buried a 3-pointer for the Tigers during their 8-0 run to go up 16-14 with 3:34 left in the second quarter. Hallsville gained the lead again, but a 5-point run by the home team sent Texas High into the locker rooms ahead 21-18.

"I got some good minutes from Anasia today," Wilson said. "Braveon played hard, and Ashanti is always Ashanti. There were a lot of contributors in this win. Hallsville beat us pretty bad in a tournament earlier, so to come back and win in district was pretty sweet."

The Bobcats knotted the score at 21-and 23-all, but Northcross had a layup followed by Wilcox's putback to give Texas High the final lead change.

The score was never closer than 3 the rest of the game, with the Tigers building a lead of eight points (45-37) once in the fourth.

Hallsville won the junior varsity game, 24-21, after a 12-1 rally in the third quarter. Wilcox led THS in the jayvee game with six points.
