Trinity Christian, PG split in rivalry games

TEXARKANA, Ark. -- Trinity Christian built a lead and won the boys game, 72-59, while Pleasant Grove did the same in the girls game in a 48-18 victory at Wallace Edgar Arena on Tuesday in cross-town rivalry varsity action.

Zach Graf led all scorers with 32 points in the boys game, while Silas Nix finished with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds). Marley Franklin swished in 15 points for the Warriors.

Adi Koller and Emma Henard each had 9 points for the Lady Hawks. Trinity Christian's Lanni Williamson had 9 points to lead the Lady Warriors.

Warriors 72, Hawks 59

Trinity Christian built a 12-point halftime lead and stayed in front over the whole second half to clinch the victory.

"The kids played well, stepped up and battled," Warriors head coach Evan Sidwell said. "Pleasant Grove has a heckuva basketball team and Coach Collvins does a great job over there. I knew this would be a big test for us. We passed the test.

"I can't say enough about Zach Graf. When we need a big bucket, he steps up and gives it to us; same with Marley Franklin and Silas Nix. When we need a big defensive stop, Nate Wall gives it to us. Micah Pete has gotten thrown into a starting role. He has stepped up and had big blocks and huge stops on the defensive end.

"We played five guys all night, but the bench was just as big. They give us momentum and help us out a lot. What a victory for us to beat a cross-town rival and beat them pretty good. Pleasant Grove played well and fast."

Trinity Christian outscored Pleasant Grove in 3 of 4 quarters. The Hawks outscored the Warriors, 19-14, in the fourth.

"Trinity did a great job on both ends of the floor," Pleasant Grove head coach Craig Collvins said. "It's my responsibility to have them ready and obviously I didn't do a great job. I thought our kids fought back in the third and early fourth defensively.

"We've got to be better getting organized on offense and defense and getting into transition when we can. Credit to the players at Trinity Christian."

The Warriors hit on 31 of 59 shots from the field (53 percent). The Hawks knocked down 23 of 61 shots (38 percent). Pleasant Grove outrebounded Trinity Christian, 38-26, but had more turnovers, 16-11.

Graf scored 11 of his 32 points in the first quarter as the Warriors grabbed a 19-13 lead. Nix and Graf each had 9 points in the second, and Trinity Christian went into the locker room with a 39-27 lead.

After outscoring PG, 19-15, in the third, the Warriors had a 58-42 edge going into the fourth quarter.

Brenton Clark, who finished with 10 points, scored eight in the fourth quarter as the Hawks tried to mount a comeback. After Clark swished one in from downtown, Pleasant Grove was within 6 points, 60-54.

Trinity Christian put together a 10-3 rally to extend its advantage, 70-57, and put the game out of reach late in the fourth.

Kennon Kelley scored 10 points for the Hawks, while teammate Torion Phillips had a team-high 8 rebounds.

Lady Hawks 48, Lady Warriors 18

Pleasant Grove built a 28-15 halftime lead and rolled past Trinity Christian after outscoring them, 20-3, in the second half.

The Lady Warriors had a tough outing from the field as they connected on just 4 of 28 shots (14 percent), while the Lady Hawks were much more accurate as they shot 41 percent (18 of 44).

Pleasant Grove outscored Trinity Christian in the third quarter, 16-1, and in the fourth quarter, 4-2.

Each team pulled down 29 boards. Pleasant Grove played a cleaner game as it turned the ball over 15 times compared to Trinity Christian's 27 turnovers.

Henard led the Hawks with 6 rebounds, while the Warriors' Williamson had a game-high 8 rebounds.

Pleasant Grove went into the locker room with a 28-15 lead. The Hawks shot 36 percent from the field in the first half on 9-of-25 shooting. Trinity Christian connected on 3 of 13 shots (23 percent from the field).

The Warriors had 18 turnovers in the first half, compared to 10 for Pleasant Grove.

Henard scored eight points in the second quarter, including a pair of treys, as the Hawks outscored Trinity Christian in the quarter, 17-6. All of the Warriors' points came via free-throw shots.
