Bears run all over Arp, win big, 52-22

ATLANTA, Texas -- DeKalb's run could not be stopped.

The Bears totaled 392 rushing yards and pulverized Arp, 52-22, in a Class 3A, Division II bi-district playoff football game at Rabbit Stadium on Friday.

Winky Williams had a game-high 206 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns for DeKalb (8-3). Amar Love had 100 yards on seven totes and a score for the Bears, while teammate Chris Betts totaled 53 yards on four attempts and a TD.

Xavier Hawkins caught an 8-yard pass from Dooley with 11:54 to go in the fourth. The strike gave DeKalb a 44-14 advantage after Love ran in the 2-point conversion.

Peyton Yandle recovered an Arp fumble in the fourth quarter. A play later, Williams broke free and ran down the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown run. Yandle ran in the 2-point try as the game was put out of reach, 52-14, with 8:47 left in the game.

The Tigers scored on a 5-yard run but still trailed, 52-22, with 6:37 to go in the fourth.

Williams ran to the outside and scored a 1-yard touchdown as the Bears took a 34-8 lead with 4:38 to go in the third quarter. Williams ran to the outside and converted the 2-point try to make it 38-8.

Arp responded with a 61-yard touchdown pass to make it a 22-point game, 36-14, with 3:31 to go in the third.

DeKalb received the opening kickoff and capped a 4-play, 58-yard drive on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Dooley to Xavier Hawkins. Dooley ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 with 9:28 to go in the first quarter.

Arp responded with a 26-yard touchdown pass and ran in the 2-point try to knot it up at 8-all with 3:26 to go in the first.

Williams broke free and sped 35 yards to paydirt and then ran in the 2-point conversion as DeKalb grabbed a 16-8 edge with 11:50 left in the second.

The Tigers drove down into Bear territory and went for it on fourth down. Love sacked the quarterback to give DeKalb possession at the Arp 41-yard line. Love found an opening and quickly rushed down the field on a 59-yard TD run to give the Bears a 22-8 advantage with 8:14 to go until halftime.

DeKalb's defense held Arp on its next drive and took back possession after an incomplete Tiger pass on fourth down. The Bears had a 68-yard, 6-play drive in 2:35 that was highlighted by Chris Betts' 31-yard rushing touchdown. The 2-point run failed but DeKalb led, 28-8, with 2:31 to go in the second quarter.

The Bears threatened to score again after the Tigers' punter bobbled the snap and was tackled by Mikey Woods. DeKalb set up at the Arp 24-yard line. Xavier Hawkins caught a 17-yard pass from Dooley as the Bears made it down to the 9-yard line with seconds left. DeKalb had a penalty that required a 10-second runoff and the second quarter ended.

DeKalb advances to the area round against Newton (9-1), which defeated Harleton, 55-14.
