Tigers tip off season today

by Josh Richert | November 16, 2021 at 10:00 p.m.

TEXARKANA, Texas -- Texas High's boys basketball team begins its season today on the road.

The Tigers, who had a shortened season a year ago due to COVID-19 changes, aim to get their legs underneath them and field a full roster before District 15-5A play begins the week of Christmas.

THS has three of its six returning varsity players on the court already, and two are still with the Tiger football team playing in the second round of the playoffs.

"Last year was not an abnormal playoff run for our football team -- they typically are going to play two or more rounds in the playoffs -- but with COVID it pushed all 5A and 6A games back a month," Tiger head coach Jacob Skinner said. "We did not see our first football player join our team until Christmas break, and a couple were in January.

"It was a really weird year. We played only 15 games, compared to 28-30-plus during a normal year. We never quit got connected because they went straight into district play."

This season, football started with smaller classifications across the state

"We're working hard to build a culture around the program," Skinner said. "We've stressed camaraderie, and we did some things in the spring to have the players own their attendance. I'm optimistic that we can win more games, and I'm really optimistic that our kids will get back to playing, enjoying the game and that we'll take the court as one unit.

"Our experience coming back will be a strength for us; three of our returners were all-district players last season, voted by the league coaches. We're going into Year 3 with a seamless program, from eighth grade to the varsity level."

The Tigers play against Sheridan today at Hot Springs Lakeside and play host Lakeside Thursday. In all, Texas High has nine games against Arkansas schools and will host the Red River Hoopfest on Dec. 3-4, facing two Louisiana teams during that event at Tiger Center.

"Our non-district schedule is loaded," Skinner said. "We'll face several Arkansas teams, and Arkansas is notorious for having well-coached and talented teams. Playing a lot of out-of-state teams will serve us well to prepare for our district."
