DeKalb clashes with Newton in playoffs

CARTHAGE, Texas -- DeKalb travels to Carthage High School's Bulldog Stadium to take on Newton in a Class 3A, Division II area football playoff game today at 7 p.m.

The Bears (8-3) entered the postseason the No. 3 seed from District 10-3A, Division II. The Eagles (9-1) entered at the No. 1 seed out of District 12-3A, Division II.

Both teams feature run-heavy offenses. DeKalb leading rusher Winky Williams has racked up 1,612 yards on 162 carries (an average of 10 yards per touch) and 18 touchdowns.

Newton is led by senior Deanthony Gatson who has totaled 1,231 yards on 154 totes (an average of 8 yards per rush) and 13 TDs.

The Bears average 33.8 points per contest and give up an average of 18.0 points.

The Eagles are on a 7-game win streak and average 50.9 points points per game. The defense has held opponents to an average of 14.2 points per contest.

Amar Love is DeKalb's second leading rusher with 661 yards on 94 attempts and seven touchdowns.

The winner will play either Waskom or Troup in the Class 3A, Division II regional semifinals next week.

UIL Texas state championship games will be played December 15-18 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
