TEXARKANA, Texas -- Pleasant Grove outscored Jefferson, 25-18, in the second half and won, 63-56, in a varsity boys basketball game at Hawk Gym on Monday.
"We are going through some adversity, but we still came out and finished the game," Pleasant Grove head coach Craig Collvins said. "Due to injuries and football playoffs, we don't have as many bodies to rotate into the game. I think this is the platform we need in order to keep getting better.
"I thought we spread the floor well and we shot the 3-ball well. The only negative is when we shoot the 3, we have to go get offensive rebounds. The defense looked pretty good and I thought we rebounded well. Overall, I am pleased to come out with the win."
Senior Kennon Kelley led the way for the Hawks with 27 points. Kelley scored 9 of his 27 points in what proved to be a pivotal third quarter.
After coming out of the locker rooms tied at 38-all at the half, Pleasant Grove went on an 11-5 run to grab a 49-43 lead late in the third quarter. Kelley converted a traditional 3-point play and slammed a dunk as the Hawks went up, 54-46. Jefferson swished in a shot from downtown, and Pleasant Grove entered the fourth up 54-49.
The Bulldogs hit a 3-pointer and then a layup to knot the game at 54-all early in the fourth. Hawk senior Kason Wright, who finished with 11 points, ripped the cords from 3-point land to give PG back the lead.
Kelley connected on two charity shots as the Hawks went up, 59-54, midway through the fourth. Jefferson hit a layup, and Pleasant Grove began working the clock as it clung on to a 59-56 advantage. The Hawks showed their fantastic ball handling skills as they drained the clock down over their last five possessions, dribbling and passing.
Kelley scored the last four points of the game on a layup and a pair of free throw shots to seal the victory. Senior Cohen Cade, who finished with 10 points, scored eight of his points in the first quarter.
Pleasant Grove (2-1) plays at New Boston today at 6:15 p.m.
