TEXARKANA, Texas -- Pleasant Grove hit on all cylinders and swept Pittsburg, 25-9, 25-14, 25-20, in a District 15-4A, Div. II varsity volleyball match on Tuesday at Hawk Gym.
"We came out playing good in the first two sets," Lady Hawks head coach Amy Collvins said. "Everyone got to play. They played hard and were consistent. It was fun. The bench is cheering for everybody and everybody was cheering for each other so there were 14 girls out there giving each other love; that is what this is about. We played hard and enjoyed the game of volleyball."
Pleasant Grove (23-13, 6-0) was engaged in the closest set of the match in set three with the Lady Pirates (17-19, 1-5). The set featured six ties at 1, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 13-all.
Pittsburg made 14 unforced errors in the set, while the Hawks had 16. Timia Cooks took the serve with Pleasant Grove down, 13-12. Harleigh O'Neal hit a kill to knot the set at 13-all.
Cooks served in five more to give the Hawks an 18-13 advantage. During the rally, Madison Carpenter put down a kill, Hallie Lipham had a tip, Cooks caused a serve-receive error and the Pirates had two hitting errors.
Lipham sent a booming kill down the right baseline to give PG the serve up, 23-20. Lipham served, caused a serve-receive error and Pittsburg had a hitting error to end the match.
Lexie Snyder finished with 11 service points and 12 digs for the Hawks. Lipham had 12 service points, 17 assists and five kills. Carpenter put down eight kills, O'Neal had six kills and Reese Gibbs had 10 assists for Pleasant Grove.
Lipham served with the Hawks up, 9-6, in the second set. Lipham served in nine consecutive points to give Pleasant Grove an 18-6 lead. During her service, the Pirates had six straight errors, Adi Koller put down a kill, Jazz Moses and Carpenter combined for a tip and Carpenter sent a kill down the back baseline.
Emma Boemke served out the final two points of the set for the Hawks. Pittsburg had 14 unforced errors in the second set and PG had nine.
Snyder served with the Hawks up, 11-8, in the first set. Snyder rattled off 13 in a row to give Pleasant Grove a 24-8 lead. Carpenter hit a kill for the set-clincher. The Hawks had just seven unforced errors in the set compared to 18 for Pittsburg.
Fallon Anthony served in 10 points to lead Pleasant Grove's junior varsity black team to a 25-7, 25-20 victory.
Whitney Thorton's eight service points propelled the Hawks' gold jayvee team to a 25-12, 26-24 win.
