Emmylou Harris' 'On Our Last Date' was recorded live

This week in 1982: King Henry's flagship, the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545 – was raised with most of its oak frame intact; Johnson & Johnson recalled all Tylenol after eight deaths reportedly caused by deliberate contamination of the product; Gen. William C. Westmoreland filed a $120 million lawsuit against CBS for libel; and a singer from Birmingham, Alabama, had her 27th hit record.

A lot of hit records start out as part of an album before being released as singles.

And Emmylou Harris' 1983 No. 1 (Lost Our Love) "On Our Last Date" was one of those tunes.

And the album was recorded under some rather unusual conditions. Emmylou's husband and record producer at the time, Brian Ahern, followed her and the Hot Band during a California concert tour in a sound truck and recorded the shows. The "Last Date" album tracks were culled from those on location concert recordings.

(Lost Our Love) "On Our Last Date" was originally titled "Last Date." Floyd Cramer wrote it and scored a top 10 instrumental hit on both country and pop charts in 1960.

Conway Twitty added lyrics to the song and his version scored a No. 1 on Decca Records in 1972. It was his 21st charted song and his 9th No. 1.

Emmylou's Warner Records single came on the charts October 16, 1982 and was in the No. 1 spot on January 22, 1983.

Her record was produced by Brian Ahern.

It was her 27th charted song and her 5th No. 1.

Emmylou Harris placed 54 songs on the country music charts between 1975 and 2004, including seven No. 1s. Eight of her 54 country chart singles also placed on the pop charts.

Emmylou joined The Grand Ole Opry in 1992 and was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2008. She received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2018 and a Billboard Century Award in 1999.
