TEXARKANA, Texas — CHRISTUS St. Michael is starting the new year with the construction of the state-of-the-art, $50 million CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital - West, set to break ground early this year.
Set to open in 2023, the new, fully-licensed hospital will be located at Gibson Lane and Arista Boulevard in Texarkana, Texas. Services at the new location of the acute care hospital will include emergency services, inpatient beds, imaging and other clinical services, therapy services and an expanded medical office space for numerous specialists.
Jason Adams, President of the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, said he anticipates this expansion project will create approximately 100 jobs for the community. The new site of service will allow CHRISTUS to see about 18,000 emergency patient visits a year, with anywhere from 2,000 and 3,000 admissions.
“We’ve known we needed to expand emergency services since pre-COVID, and then COVID slowed everything down,” Adams said. “So, as we looked at expanding our capacity, we thought a new site of service would be more advantageous than just expanding at one location. It’s geographically more accessible, and it reduces congestion on our campus.”
CHRISTUS has determined the scope of services for the facility and is finalizing the design of the building and construction documents at the moment.
All of the services offered at the current hospital will remain the same, and Adams said CHRISTUS is also looking at growth opportunities at the main hospital.
“These are projects that don’t come along every day, so it’s incredible to be a part of it and to look at new ways to expand our footprint and serve the communities in the Ark-La-Tex region,” Adams said. “It’s an extension of our ability to continue to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Our mission is core to everything we do, and this helps fulfill that mission and commitment to the community that we’ve had since 1916.”
This announcement comes a few months after Wadley Regional Medical Center broke ground for its new $227 million hospital facility at West Park Boulevard.
“Expanding access to high-quality care for this community and surrounding areas is a much-needed addition and a true benefit for patients,” said Loren K. Robinson, M.D., Chief Medical Officer and Vice President Medical Affairs. “This facility will be able to provide a high level of services and convenience as well as an opportunity for improved health in an additional location.”
