Doris Holley

Doris Holley passed peacefully into the arms of God on January 23, 2018 at the age of 91. She was born on November 25, 1926 to John and Mabel Weeks Holley in Garland City, Arkansas. Her faith was strong and was evident through her dedication to the United Methodist Church, particularly the Garland Methodist Church where she served tirelessly from teaching Sunday School, to making sure the church was unlocked each Sunday morning. When she could no longer attend church she faithfully watched Pulaski Heights Methodist Church on television each Sunday morning or attended chapel services at Presbyterian Village. After 30 years of teaching elementary school in Garland City, Huttig, Brinkley and Lonoke Doris retired to her hometown of Garland City. Her dedication to her students had a lifelong impact on many as evidenced by the many who continued to visit or correspond with her throughout her life. In retirement she enjoyed watching sports (especially the Razorbacks), working in her yard, working with ceramics and spending time with family. Doris cherished her trips to see Karen, Richard, Peyton and Garrett, eventually moving to Little Rock to be closer to them. Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her sisters Nellie and Lucille and brothers Buster, Chester, Jesse and Ray. She is survived by her niece and husband, Karen and Richard Phelps; great niece and nephew, Peyton Phelps and Garrett Phelps; and brother by marriage, James Nix. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the CNA's, nurses and staff of Presbyterian Village for all the care they provided to Doris over the last several years. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, at the Garland Community Church in Garland City followed by a celebration of Doris' life at 1:30 p.m. at the Church under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, AR. Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Village, 510 Brookside Drive, Little Rock, AR 72205. Online registration is available at www.aosmithfuneralhome.com.
