Edwin Dodson

Dr. Edwin B. Dodson of Texarkana, Arkansas passed away May 18, 2018. Ed was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas on December 22, 1922. He graduated from Mariana High School, Hendrix College and Southern Methodist University, Perkins School of Theology. Ed was awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Hendrix College. He served as a minister in the United Methodist Church from 1946 until his retirement in 1984. He served churches in Becker, Texas, Widener, Round Pond, Madison, Tuni, Berryville, Pocahontas, Siloam Springs, Batesville, Benton, Camden and Texarkana, Arkansas. Ed was a former member of the Board of Trustees of Hendrix College. During his ministry at the First United Methodist Church of Texarkana, Arkansas, Ed served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southwest Arkansas Mental Health Center, the Texarkana Religious Emphasis Committee, and the Volunteer Services Bureau. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Chapter of the American Red Cross; Senior Citizens Services of Texarkana; the Temple Memorial Treatment Center; Hospice of Texarkana; Awareness of Crime in Texarkana and a member of the Executive Committee of United Way, where he was a recipient of the United Way Cline Cup Award, and a member of the Institutional Review Committees of St. Michael Hospital and Wadley Hospital. He was the founder and first President of the Board of One Point of Light, which became Harvest Texarkana, which channels surplus food to feed hungry children and adults. Ed is predeceased by his parents, Francis and Mary (Molly) Dodson and his brothers and sister, Hendrix Dodson, Morris Dodson, Delle Paulk, Frank Dodson and Eugene Dodson; his wife, Ellen Becker Dodson, his son Don Dodson and daughter-in-law Kathy Dodson. He is survived by his children Bob Dodson and Dick and Cheryl Dodson. Ed had five grandchildren: Mark Dodson; Robert and Katie Dodson; David Dodson; John & Christen Dodson and Mason Dodson. He also had five great-grandchildren: McKenna; Becker; Banks; Brady and Bryce Dodson. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Texarkana, Arkansas with Reverend Jaimie Alexander officiating and under the direction of East Funeral Home, Moores Lane. Interment will be on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 10:30 at the Becker Family Cemetery in Becker, Texas under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Texarkana, Arkansas or the Becker United Methodist Church, Becker, Texas.
