Laverne Connor

Laverne Connor, age 84, formerly of Daingerfield and presently of Bryan, Texas, passed away on August 2, 2018 at CHI St Joseph Manor. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Daingerfield, Texas. Interment will follow at the Daingerfield Cemetery in Daingerfield, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Nail-Haggard Funeral Home. Laverne was born on March 9, 1934 in Bowie County, Texas to Darrell Alton and Myrtie Jane Mozingo. She married Harold Merrill Connor on June 20, 1959 and shared 35 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 1994. After graduation from Redwater High School, she attended Texarkana College and the University of Texas in Austin where she graduated with a BS in Elementary Education. Her first teaching assignment was Hooks Elementary teaching third grade, followed by elementary schools in New Boston, Redwater, Lone Star, and finally West Elementary in Daingerfield, where she spent the remainder of her career teaching first grade. She retired in 1996 after teaching 34 years in the State of Texas, with 31 of those years in the Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD. She loved her students and inspired many children throughout her life with the love of reading and the importance of education. Laverne was active in many professional organizations, including Pandora Study Club, Morris County Texas State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and PEO. As a young child, she came to know her Lord at Redwater Methodist Church and was later baptized and joined Lone Star Baptist Church. After moving to Daingerfield, she was a very active member of First Baptist Church Daingerfield serving as a Sunday School teacher for many years, active in WMU, and serving on the Hospitality Committee. Laverne was a devout Christian, an avid reader and loved to travel. She lived independently for many years in Daingerfield after the loss of her husband. In 2008, she moved to Bryan, Texas to be closer to her son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Diana. Laverne was preceded in death by her loving husband Harold M. Connor, parents Darrell Alton and Myrtie Jane Mozingo, sisters Dossie Shoemaker, Flossie Smith, and Margie Walker, brother-in-law Kenneth Walker, and daughter-in-law Diana Connor. Laverne is survived by her son, Michael H. Connor, of Bryan, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary Beth Peoples, of Burnet, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation. Special thanks to all her caregivers and staff at CHI St Joseph Manor and Hospice Brazos Valley in Bryan, Texas.
